چکیده

We explore the longitude-velocity distribution of 6.7–GHz methanol masers in the context of the inner structure of our Galaxy. We analyse the correlation in velocities within this distribution and identify density enhancements indicating large-scale regions of enhanced star formation. These are interpreted as the starting points of the spiral arms and the interaction of the Galactic bar with the 3–kpc arms. The methanol masers support the presence of a long thin bar with a 45 orientation. Signatures of the full 3–kpc arm structure are seen, including a prominent tangent at approximately −22 Galactic longitude. We compare this distribution with existing models of the gas dynamics of our Galaxy. The 3–kpc arm structure appears likely to correspond to the radius of corotation resonance of the bar, with the bar on its inner surface and the starting points of the spiral arms on its outer surface. High-mass Star Formation in the near and Far 3-kpc Arms

We report on the presence of 6.7-GHz methanol masers, known tracers of high-mass star formation, in the 3-kpc arms of the inner Galaxy. We present 49 detections from the Methanol Multibeam Survey, the largest Galactic plane survey for 6.7-GHz methanol masers, which coincide in longitude, latitude and velocity with the recently discovered far-side 3-kpc arm and the well known near-side 3-kpc arm...

A Search for 6.7 Ghz Methanol Masers in Oh Megamaser Galaxies

We report the results of a search for 6.7 GHz methanol (CH3OH) maser emission in OH megamaser galaxies at 0.11 < z < 0.27. No detections were made in the 25 objects observed down to rms noise levels of roughly 0.6 mJy in 150 kHz channels. The OH megamaser sample includes OH emission of all observed types: narrow and broad, physically compact and extended, variable and quiescent, and from simple...

A comprehensive search for extragalactic 6.7-GHz methanol masers

We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for 6.7-GHz methanol maser emission towards 87 galaxies. We chose the target sources using several criteria, including far-IR luminosities and the presence of known OH megamasers. In addition, we searched for methanol masers in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, making a full spectral-line synthesis image. No emission was dete...

A general catalogue of 6.7-GHz methanol masers⋆ I: data

Methanol masers are often detected in regions of intense star formation. Several studies in the last decade indicate that they may even be the earliest signpost of a high-mass star-forming region. Their powerful emission make them very good candidates for observations using both single–dish telescopes and interferometers, the latter allows detailed structural and dynamical studies of these obje...
